Hello all you STAG members out there! Welcome to the first newsletter in the New Year – though you are probably sick of hearing it – Happy New Year!
Now we are in the New Year we can start to prepare for our 2006 programme of stage events, starting with the evening of one Act Plays. As mentioned earlier and in the last newsletter we held a workshop afternoon on Sunday 8th January to read through some scripts to perform, these included “Captain Blackboot's Island” and “Fans”
For those that turned up, an entertaining afternoon was had. We have decided to hold an Audition afternoon on Sunday 15th January at the hut. Hopefully you can attend, and please bring anyone else you think may want to take part.
After the One Act Plays in March, the Guild’s summer production will happen. After what seems to be an age, and much discussion we have chosen to perform Tons of Money, a farce which was adapted by Alan Ayckbourn. The synopsis is as follows –
Alan Ayckbourn's version of the first of the famous Aldwych farces was produced by the National Theatre. It is the story of an unsuccessful inventor who inherits the life interest in a fortune which is to revert on his death to his cousin George Maitland As Cousin George is thought to have died abroad, the inventor has the brilliant idea of "dying" so that he can resurrect himself as his cousin and avoid paying his enormous debts. Complications arise in the form of George's wife, another Maitland imposter (the butler's brother) and finally the real George Maitland himself!
Chris “the Prompt” Phillips has volunteered to be the Director and Alex has offered to be Producer. We will be holding Auditions on Saturday 21st January 7.30pm at the Hut
The Guild is going to the dogs! No, really! We have decided after some members mentioned a lack of social functions of late to organise a few nights out. The first one of the New Year will be a night at Monmore green in Wolverhampton to see the dog racing. The date set is Saturday 18th February. The cost will be the princely sum of £20 per head, this includes:
Transport
entrance
Race card
basket meal (i.e. chicken/scampi/burger & Chips [or veggie option])
2 drinks from the bar
3 forecast bets
1 jackpot bet
Obviously this is mainly for the over 18’s due to the gambling aspect, but if there are any under 18’s who want to go (with parental consent – I will provide a form if requested) I will look into a price for you without the drinks and bets.
Closing date for bookings will be Saturday 4th February so I can book the transport and tickets in good time.
Please let Alex know if you would like to go.
Please note there is a 50% (i.e. £10) non refundable deposit to be made ASAP after you let me know you want to come, if you don’t pay the deposit, you don’t secure your place, sorry to play the hard-line on this one, but I have it on good authority that on other occasions other organisers have been left high and dry.
Other Nights out planned include theatre trips we are considering one (or more dependant of interest):
Sun 23 April 06 Rentaghost (come on hands up who remembers the TV show!)
Tue 16 May -Sat 20 May Jungle Book
6 March 2006 - 11 March “Anything Goes” a musical farce
31 Jan 06 - 4 Feb Macbeth
28 Feb - 4 Mar My Fair Lady
9 - 11 March Twelfth Night
21 - 25 March Brideshead Revisited
28 March - 1 April Shadowlands
11 - 20 May Noises Off
All of these will be in one of the theatres in Birmingham if you would like to go to one (or more) of these let me know so we can gauge interest and plan accordingly (though I think personally Rentaghost is a good idea – hint hint!).
Lastly (for the time being) we are planning a Guild trip to Drayton Manor Park and Zoo in May/June. Information is sketchy at present mainly because the park is closed until March and they have not put up their 2006 pricing structure! At the moment I am judging interest in this, to see if it is worth going. I plan to arrange it for a Saturday (no school/ work etc the next day – cunning eh?!) so again please let me know if you want to go, and depending on numbers will then let everyone know cost and proposed timetable etc.
So a final reminder for your diaries of forthcoming events (i.e. laying it on thick)

TTFN
Alex
