STOURPORT THREE ARTS GUILD

NEWSLETTER – June 2006

The weather continues to fluctuate between scorching sunshine and torrential rain; England fail to inspire in the World Cup; Tim Henman plays like a girl at Wimbledon; all sorts of shenanigans occur in “Hollyoaks”…

… nothing changes …so here’s your opportunity to get away from it all: make a cuppa, sit back, put your feet up and read the latest Guild newsletter.

NOVEMBER PRODUCTION

We have almost made a decision as to what the November production will be…almost because we have narrowed our decision down to a choice of two plays.

Our reason for having two plays to choose from is that the two selected plays are very different in style and cast requirements: one is a musical with the scope for a large cast whilst the other is a straight play which could be performed by a much smaller cast – quite simply, we are hedging our bets to see how many people turn up to auditions.

Both plays feature roles for youth and adult performers with a good variety of large and small roles plus the possibility of adding non-speaking extras.

The two selected plays are:

“The Boy Who Fell Into A Book”

a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn

This excellent play requires a minimum of six people to stage – though there is scope to add additional performers due to the nature of the script.

Brief synopsis:

Rockfist Slim's enemies have just plunged him into yet another desperate situation when Kevin has to close his detective book and go to sleep. But his own adventure is only just beginning. Fast-moving, fun and full of special effects, Ayckbourn's wonderfully inventive play for children brings alive several well-known children's books as Kevin and Rockfist Slim escape the baddies and plunge into many different worlds.

“The Canterville Ghost”

a musical comedy by Peter Quilter & Charles Miller from a story by Oscar Wilde

This light-hearted romp requires a larger cast – though not all roles are singing and some roles would be quite small.

Brief synopsis:

When a brash American family stay at the gothic English stately home Canterville Chase, they fail to be the least bit frightened by Sir Simon, the resident ghost. Condemned by a curse to haunt the house forever, Sir Simon tries every spooky trick in the book, though his antics only provide amusement. But young Virginia, appalled by her family's behaviour, seeks out the depressed ghost and befriends him. Can she help him lift the curse?

There will be a workshop and auditions on Sunday July 2nd at Areley Kings Village Hall (2pm – 5pm) – we will workshop both scripts and then decide which of the two scripts to undertake, based on the number of people who want to audition for the production and the general feeling of everyone who is there as to which play is favourite.

Please do come along…whichever play we choose to undertake will be fun and exciting to rehearse and should provide much amusement and entertainment for our audiences. If you know of anyone who might want to join our happy group, please drag them along and get them involved.

JUNE 2007

We are also looking ahead to next summer and our major production for June next year. A copy of “The Darling Of Buds Of May” – the stage version of the wonderful TV series starring David Jason and Pam Ferris – is currently ‘doing the rounds’ of Guild committee members for reading and consideration as a possible Guild production.

This production would feature a good-sized cast with youth and adult roles available and would certainly be an eye-catching name to pull in good audiences.

If you have any suggestions for plays that would be worth considering for the Guild then please let me know. You may have seen a suitable play on-stage or read a script in drama class at school or just always thought that a stage version of your favourite film would be a good production…you would be surprised at how many films start their ‘life’ as a stage play.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES … shared with us by Don Williams

Don’t we enjoy boring people with our holiday snaps!

You know the sort of thing:

“This is me under the Eiffel Tower

“Here’s the Eiger – we went past it on the train”

“Here we are in St Peter’s Square in Rome, waiting for the Pope to pop out”

And of course there are lots more…

However, interesting places are not all necessarily abroad.

Did you know that in the churchyard at Hope Bagott (a village near Ludlow) there is a yew tree that is 1600 years old? Nearby is a Holy Well, the waters of which are said to be beneficial to the eyes, and, if you know where to look, built into the outside wall of the Church is a face carved in stone by the Celts – and they were here 500 years before the Romans.

If I remember…I’ll bring the photos to show you!
